about

These are all songs that I recorded in Santa Cruz at my apartment during the 2020 shelter in place order. 6 Tracks, 7 songs. (Raw Fish and KKK highway run together on the same track)

I recorded six of the songs and made videos for them originally for the Supernova Saturdays online show. Like many people lately, I've found it hard to focus and difficult to be creative and write new songs. However, revisiting some of my older tunes and putting new twists on them with the instruments and gear that I have on hand has been a cathartic and a welcome distraction from the onslaught of insanity we are all witnessing in the world during this pandemic.

Here's a quick breakdown of how the process went for me. I'd pick a song that I wanted to revisit (I tried to go mostly for tunes with a ska feel since it was originally for the Supernova family) and I'd get the best take I could on vocals while playing guitar all the way through. I didn't play along to a metronome or drum machine, so it's a little different than how I would normally go about recording. I was really trying to get a live feel. I'd film those takes and then build off of them. Adding a lead guitar, adding bass, piano, slide guitar, etc. Anything I'd have on hand to try and fill it out a little while maintaining a live-ish vibe.

I edited those videos together and they all debuted as videos on Supernova, peppered in with an interview I did with Coolie Ranx. It was fun, and felt a bit like playing a show. It was good to have a deadline too, and it pushed me to record and edit videos when I truly felt like shrinking into a ball and binging on terrible TV.

After the Supernova thing, I had these songs recorded and messed around with mixing them, and got to thinking that they sounded pretty good, and that some people might be interested in hearing these, so I got them sounding as good as possible and started thinking about releasing them as an EP.

Then, unprompted and out of the blue, my friend Gilbert sent me the Heart guy with the headband and tool belt drawing. He will sometimes just draw funny stuff and send it to me for fun. I loved the art so much and knew that it needed to be the cover.. and title. But that meant that I needed to record a new version of Heartbeat Survival to fit with the cover. So, THANK YOU to Gilbert for inspiring me to round this out with the lead off title track, which I'm super stoked on.
